Rules for the exams 2012/13

The exam will consist of two parts:

A written test consisting in a few theoretical questions of the type shown in some exercises.
A home assignment of some problems consisting of data to be analysed using R. The solutions (in the form of an R-script, those that wish to add figures or comments can send a separate file) have to be sent by e-mail to pugliese at science.unitn.it. Students will be asked to present the results obtained in a short (max 15 minutes) colloquium; this has the main aim of ensuring that the problem has been solved by the student her/him-self.
The problems will be the same for all students in 2012/13. However, each student will have a different dataset that will be sent to him/her following the procedures described below.

Students that take Statistical Models will take a shorter version of test and home assignment, concerning the topics of the first part of the course. Dates and signing for the exams:

For each session of exams (from January 2013 onwards), the date for the short colloquium will be shown on Esse-3. Students willing to participate must sign in through Esse-3; they must have passed the written test before the date of the colloquium and have sent the solved exercises at least 3 days before that date. If they have not yet received the data for their homework (see below), after signing they will receive by e-mail the data to be analysed. If this does not happen, please send an e-mail to pugliese at science.unitn.it to remind me.
The dates of the written tests will also be shown in Esse-3 under "Prova parziale". Students willing to participate must sign in.
During the course, I will organize a written test on the first part of the course (that counts as a complete test for students of Statistical models) on November 12. Students willing to participate must send an e-mail to pugliese at science.unitn.it. The e-mails must have a clear subject (something like "enrollment written test") and consist of a single line with Surname Name Numero di matricola (i.e. ID number of the university) e-mail address separated by a space. Those that do not yet have a university ID, please put NA instead.
Students of "Data analysis and exploration" that take that written test satisfactorily, can attend a second test on December 19 (Room 104, if no further information); otherwise thy can take a shorter version (on the second part only of the course) of the written test in the January exam session.
I will also publish the home assignments during the course, and start sending the relative datasets to students that ask for that by sending an e-mail to pugliese at science.unitn.it. The e-mails must have a clear subject (something like "datasets for Data Analysis") and consist of a single line with Surname Name Numero di matricola (i.e. ID number of the university) e-mail address separated by a space. As specified above, the completed home assignments can be sent to me any time during or after the course lectures, up to 3 days before the date of the colloquium.
