Format and Topics

The title of the workshop is inspired by the celebrated book by David Mumford: Curves and their Jacobians, The University of Michigan Press, Ann Arbor 1975, collecting four lectures delivered by the author in November 1974. Almost forty years later, the four topics addressed by Mumford are still of deep interest in algebraic geometry and it is worth to take stock of the situation. The index of Mumford’s masterpiece reads as:

Lecture I: What is a curve and how explicitly can we describe them?

Lecture II: The moduli space of curves: definition, coordinatization, and some properties.

Lecture III: How Jacobians and theta functions arise.

Lecture IV: The Torelli theorem and the Schottky problem.

Correspondingly, the workshop consists of four courses (of 5 hours each, to be spread on four days) devoted to the contemporary state of the art delivered by:

Marian Aprodu (Bucharest): Equations and syzygies of projective curves. (program)

Gabriele Mondello (Roma I): Riemann surfaces, ribbon graphs and combinatorial classes. (program)

Paolo Stellari (Milano): Derived categories and the geometry of curves and their Jacobians. (program)

Filippo Viviani (Roma Tre): The Torelli morphism and the Torelli theorem. (program)
