The Double Bubble Theorem says
that the familiar double soap bubble is the least-area way to enclose and
separate two given volumes of air. I'll discuss the problem and recent
proof (with Hutchings, Ritore', and Ros, Annals of Math., March 2002),
including a new second variation formula, for singular surfaces.
