METAMATERIALS:

are defined as materials showing predetermined response to an external excitation, dependents from their structure rather than their composition.

Nanoscience Lab main interests focus on:

  1. Photonic Crystals (PC):
    • 1D PC. Complex porosu silicon multilayers samples (having up to 300 layers), both with periodic and random structures, were fabricated and characterized in our laboratories. Research pertain with light diffusion in these 1D complex structures, few selected results are listed below:
      • experimental verification of the photonic Bloch oscillations;
      • demonstration of Necklace states existence in 1D PC in the Anderson localized regime;
      • Zener tunneling in optical superlattices;
      • optical bistability;
    • 2D PC in macroporous silicon (slow light effects, nonlinear optics, Thz generation)
  2. Photonic Structures in Waveguides (WG) configuration:
    • different types of structured WGs are studied (rib, strip loaded, slot, passive, active doped with Si-nc). Usually a nonlinear optical response is expected from these samples and found application as:
      • logic ports;
      • delay lines;
      • reconfigurable optical filters;
      • sensors.
