Generation and interference effectes with quantum states of light

The study of quantum states of light is a rapidly developing field of research. In recent years, scientists have begun to find situations where quantum mechanically systems provide unique solutions to modern technological problems. Quantum information processing (QIP) is an exciting example of promising applications of such systems.

Within the NanoScience Group, we are exploring the quantum correlation properties of light generated by the non linear process of Spontaneous Parametric Down Conversion. The mechanism generates two infrared photon, with peculiar quantum properties, from the splitting of a single pump photon at 775 nm. We are investigating their time-energy entanglement by performing coincidence measurements and demonstrating nonclassical interference in a free space Mach Zehnder Interferometer.
